Since the very first year of its existence, the AVRU has had students involved in research projects. Actually the first AVRU postgraduate student, a University of Melbourne Department of Pharmacology Honours student, Mr Peter Hobbins, enjoyed the experience so much that he has rejoined the Unit more than a decade later, this time as a Masters student. As well as hosting Honours, Masters and PhD students, the AVRU has PNG, European and American students and Fulbright Scholars as well as postgraduate trainees in Emergency Medicine.
