Leeches are found in a variety of habitats. Bites from venomous leeches are potentially dangerous and require a special first aid technique.
What is It? – This technique removes the leech from the victim’s skin.
Why is it Done?– It prevents the venom spreading into the wound site.
How is it Done?
Step 1: Find the bite site.
Tell the patient to stay still.
Step 2: Do not squeeze or pull on the leech as these actions may mean that the leech’s mouthpart is left in the wound.
Remove the leech by applying salt, vinegar or a hot object (for example, an extinguished hot, match head).
Step 3: If bleeding persists, apply local pressure to the wound.
